Mrs. Sonia Gandhi was born as Antonia Edvige Albina Maino. She was born to Stefano and Paola Maino in Contrada Maini at Lusiana, a small village in Veneto, Italy on 9-12-1946. Where their family has been living for generations. She exhausted her teenage years in Orbassano near a town named Turin. Her family follows Roman Catholic traditional values. Therefore, she attended a Catholic school. In 1964, she studied English at Bell Educational Trust’s school in Cambridge city. She was working as a member of the staff serving at table at a Greek eating-place. There she met Mr. Rajiv Gandhi who was a student in Trinity College at the University of Cambridge in 1965 to start a relationship. She moved to India at her mother-in-law’s house who was Prime Minister in 1968. She has two children, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra born in 1970 and 1972 respectively. Regardless of belonging to political family of Nehru who was the first prime minister of independent India, they avoided politics. Mr. Rajiv Gandhi served, as a pilot in the airlines and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi looked her family. In 1977, during consequences of Indian Emergency when Mrs. Indira Gandhi was expelled, Rajiv family shift abroad for a short span of time. After Mr. Sanjay Gandhi’s death in 1980 in a plane crash on 23-6-1980, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi go into politics and Mrs. Sonia avoided all public contact and centered on the family in 1980. In 1983, her father died who was a building mason. In Orbassano, her mother still lives with her two daughters.
About Mrs. Sonia Gandhi you should know that she is an Indian politician and now being designated as President of Indian National Congress party. This is also the prominent political party in India. She is a widow of late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi who was former prime minister of India and fits in Nehru-Gandhi family. Following his tragic death in 1991, she was requested by Indian National Congress members to become the prime minister of India. However, she said no and remained away from Indian politics even while asked by the members of the party. She finally said yes to politics and joined in 1997. Moreover, in 1998, she was chosen by ballot as the president of the INC.
As from then, until now she is head of INC. She has dish up as Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in Lok Sabha as from 2004. After being reelected for fourth time, she is also now longest working president in history of party.
